PoE budget calculator

Enter your switch's PoE budget and the devices you'll plug in. The result updates as you type.

Your switch

The total PoE budget is on the switch's datasheet, usually as "PoE power budget". It is lower than the power supply rating.

Powered devices

Watts are what the switch reserves for each class, which is the safe way to plan. The real draw is often lower; use the datasheet's maximum if you know it.

How PoE budgets work

A PoE switch has two limits. Each port can deliver a maximum set by its standard: 15.4 W for 802.3af, 30 W for 802.3at (PoE+), 60 W for 802.3bt Type 3 and 90 W for Type 4. The whole switch also has a total PoE budget, which is usually much less than every port running at full power.

Many switches reserve power by the device's class when it connects, so planning with class power is the safe method. Leave about 20% headroom for growth and for devices that draw more at startup.
